Wezhinoo'igejig Scholars celebrate the start of the semester
The first cohort of Wezhinoo’igejig Scholars kicked off the school year with an opening feast on September 27 at Fond du Lac Tribal and Community College.
Wezhinoo’igejig: Ojibwe Scholars in Early Childhood is an online cohort enrolled in the early childhood BS degree program at ICD. Students take courses in child development, early childhood education, and Ojibwe immersion pedagogy. The online-only pathway allows students to work towards a bachelor’s degree while continuing to work in their communities. Graduates will be well prepared to teach in Ojibwe immersion early childhood programs.
The opening feast offered an in-person opportunity for students to get to know their instructors, CEHD faculty and staff, and one another. The event began with a ceremony that included smudging and the offering of tobacco and food. Fond du Lac Tribal and Community College’s beautiful amphitheater opens to the outdoors, so participants took full advantage of beautiful fall weather while enjoying a meal together. The ICD community is excited to welcome the Wezhinoo’igejig Scholars and to contribute to Ojibwe language revitalization by supporting the next generation of speakers.
